Easter and Psanky

If you know me well you know that I have some off the wall interests/skills and that I can’t do anything the easy way.

Easter eggs are no different. I worked with a librarian many years ago who taught me Psanky, the Ukrainian art of waxed and dyed Easter eggs. You draw on the egg with beeswax using little metal funnels called kistky (plural for kistka). in between each application of wax you put it in a colored dye. After it’s all done you melt the wax off, leaving the different colored dyes the wax preserved. Traditionally, different symbols and colors have special meaning. I tend to just do what I like!

  1. My mom took a class on Ukrainian Easter eggs once! I've always wanted to learn how to do that. It looks so intricate and elaborate. Yours are beautiful!
